2021 Summer reading program

AmerLib_SummerReading2021

It’s that time of year again! The Americus Library is now accepting applicants for the Summer Reading program. The theme this year is Tails and Tales, stories about our many legged and furry friends. Parents help your children learn more about the different types of animals and fables featuring them. Kids read about whatever animal interests you most and enjoy the variety of activities available to you at your library.

We are all aware and weary of the restrictions Covid-19 imposes on our traditional activities. In response all our activities offered for the Summer Reading program will be grab and go; enjoy fun activities and crafts in the safety of your home.

Our Reading program starts this June, Thursdays from 9-12 AM, so don’t delay signing up. We look forward to hearing and seeing you.

Please stop in to apply or call/email.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

1000 Books Before Kindergarten at your local library!

Did you know that reading to your child is one of the most powerful ways to boost his or her brain power? The simple and enjoyable act of sharing books helps your child learn pre-reading skills such as understanding the sounds letters make, developing a bigger vocabulary, and building background knowledge.
The library has 1000 Book Before Kindergarten packets, or download the 1000 Books  Before Kindergarten app for iPhone and Android.  Come to the library for prizes and/or awards at the 100 book achievements.

Pop Tabs for Topeka Ronald McDonald House

Collecting pop tabs is a way to give back to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northeast Kansas (Topeka).  When aluminum pop tabs are sent they are taken to a recycling center. The money then to goes back into the House for general operating expenses.  The library is collecting pop tabs to donate!  Bring yours in!

Crayon Initiative

We collect crayons year round!  All donations will be accepted.  If they are in good condition, we might keep them for our arts and crafts.  All other crayons will be donated to The Crayon Initiative, where they will be melted down, reshaped, and donated to children hospitals around the United States.

Children’s Mercy in Kansas City, MO and Wesley in Wichita are now getting crayons from The Crayon Initiative.  Any donations sent to The Crayon Initiative may end up at these local children hospitals!

Crayon Donations

As school comes to an end, remember that the library collects crayons.  If they are in good condition, we might keep them for our arts and crafts.  All other crayons will be donated to The Crayon Initiative, where they will be melted down, reshaped, and donated to children’s hospitals around the United States.

We have one box ready to go, and will wait until school is out for all Lyon County schools before sending anymore.  Can we get another box full?
